Dallas Theater Center (DTC) seeks applicants for a new Resident Musical Director position to join our highly collaborative and versatile company of Resident Artists. This new, full-time staff position will work with the Artistic Director and Artistic Producer as well as the other Resident and guest artists (directors, designers, actors, playwright) to craft the artistic programming for this robust and diverse institution. DTC seeks candidates who will work in support of our mission and values and who share our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. The Resident Music Director will report to the Artistic Producer, and will serve as the leader of music for our theatrical productions including hiring and supervising musicians, providing music direction, conducting, and providing support for composers. Duties include musical direction on all mainstage musicals; musical direction of all cabarets/concerts/galas or small touring productions; music supervision on all mainstage plays and as needed on developmental work; contracting of all union and non-union musicians, teaching in DTC’s Public Works programs (education & community engagement). The Music Director will work as part of the Producing Team, the Season Planning Team, and the Artistic Staff; and will serve as an artistic advocate and leader in the community. This is an Exempt, salaried position, with a full benefits package including medical, dental and vision insurance and paid-time off. Some evenings and weekends may be required, as needed throughout the year.
Additional Info:
-Resident Music Director will be employed full-time by DTC and will be issued appropriate union contracts for work governed by the unions and/or LORT
-Compensation package includes health insurance and benefits
-Resident Music Director will maintain a residence in the Dallas area at their own expense
-Resident Music Director will have a mid-season and an annual review with the Artistic Producer to determine individual goals and future opportunities that are mutually beneficial to the company member and DTC.
-Presumes a 40-hour work week most weeks. Institutional responsibilities will take place around rehearsal and performance schedules without infringing upon rehearsals and artistic primary responsibilities
-Any work outside of DTC must be pre-approved by the Artistic Producer and Artistic Director and must not conflict with your designated musical director and institutional responsibilities
Skills and Knowledge
-Music Directing skills including vocal direction, band direction, rehearsal pianist, curation and orchestration of musical materials
-Broad knowledge of musical theater processes, techniques and trends
-Working understanding of American Federation of Musicians (AFM) regulations and requirements
-Basic composition skills
-Bilingual/fluent in Spanish a plus
-Ability to work effectively in a co-operative and approachable manner working collaboratively, positively and productively with all DTC staff including production departments, artists, technicians and administrators within the confines of time and budget
-Must demonstrate leadership, and work in a collaborative nature as part of a team
-Must be able to work under the stress of deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
-Must be able to handle a high volume of work and attend to numerous projects concurrently
-Must display a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
-Must perform work consistent with the Mission, Vision and Values of DTC
Experience and Education Requirements
-Member of American Federation of Musicians (AFM) or equivalent experience
-4+ years professional experience working as a Music Director and conductor
-Experienced vocal coach
-Proven ability to contract high caliber musicians in all musical styles and in accordance with AFM rules as applicable
