The Shed is a new cultural institution of and for the 21st century. We produce and welcome innovative art and ideas, across all forms of creativity, to build a shared understanding of our rapidly changing world and a more equitable society. In our highly adaptable building on Manhattan’s west side, The Shed brings together established and emerging artists to create new work in fields ranging from pop to classical music, painting to digital media, theater to literature, and sculpture to dance. About the Position
The Publicist plays an important role within The Shed’s Marketing & Communications team, which is charged with developing and driving local, national, and global visibility for The Shed and creating comprehensive campaigns to publicize all performances, exhibitions, programs, initiatives, and events. The Publicist reports to the Director of Communications and liaises with other members of the Marketing & Communications team to build awareness for The Shed’s multidisciplinary exhibitions and performances and develop strong relationships with media to foster a broad appreciation for The Shed’s artistic vision and programs. The ideal candidate will be someone who connects deeply with The Shed’s mission, is a creative, deadline-driven, detail-oriented self-starter who works collaboratively and efficiently with colleagues across multiple departments.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to
-Work with the Director of Communications to devise and secure maximum coverage for The Shed’s programs and initiatives across a broad range of print, digital, and broadcast outlets and social media channels including leading and assisting on PR campaigns
-Draft, coordinate, and distribute press materials include press releases, media alerts, pitch letters, fact sheets, presentations, and other communications materials for external and internal audiences including creating and managing press kits
-Liaise closely with external PR agencies, artist publicists, and managers to maximize media coverage for specific performances, artists, and other initiatives
-Assist with organizing events for press, including previews of exhibitions and performances, early-access viewings, building site visits, and media briefings
-Provide relevant and informed media-related advice to artists and Shed staff including managing media opportunities
-Oversee logistics of press photo/video shoots
-Maintain digital assets for press in digital management platform and online press room
-Contribute to the operation of the Shed’s communications department, including press ticketing, departmental calendar, media monitoring and reporting, maintaining an extensive, up-to-date contact database, and ensuring that all press queries are dealt with efficiently and in a timely manner
Qualifications and Qualities
-Minimum four years of public relations, media relations, communications or journalism experience, ideally in an arts or nonprofit environment, agency or in-house
-Excellent writing and communications skills
-Understanding of the arts and culture landscape in NYC and a demonstrated personal interest in visual and performing arts
-Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment to deliver multiple projects in a timely manner
-Keen attention to detail and strong strategic, organizational, and project management skills
-Working knowledge of digital communications, emerging media platforms, and engaging key influencers with a developed network of media contacts across arts, entertainment and news media
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $70,000 – $80,000 annually. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Schedule
The Shed is a hybrid workplace where employees work onsite at The Shed three days a week and remote two days. This position requires some evenings and weekends with advance notice.
