Arena Stage was founded August 16, 1950 in Washington, D.C. by Zelda Fichandler, Tom Fichandler and Edward Mangum. Over 65 years later, Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director Molly Smith and Executive Director Edgar Dobie, is a national center dedicated to American voices and artists. JOB DESCRIPTION
The Production Carpenter operates under the supervision of the Technical Direction team to run and maintain each production as assigned. This includes load in, technical rehearsals, and strike. May also be scheduled to work in the scene shop in between production assignments.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operate as backstage crew during technical and dress rehearsals. Obtain working knowledge and understanding of production needs, primarily within the scenic department, but may include assisting other departments within the production as needed. This position often requires appearing onstage in costume
• Maintain all scenic elements throughout the run of each production as assigned
• Help maintain and improve stage space, scene shop, and storage facilities
• Assist in the load in and load out of productions or events, as assigned
• Assist in the build of productions, as needed
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
• 1-2 years’ experience in professional theater preferred
• Familiarity with basic scenic carpentry
• Experience with hand and power tool usage
• Willing to contribute to a culture of workplace safety
• Familiarity with backstage equipment such as counterweight rigging and automated systems
• Open to learning how to use Clancy SceneControl 500 & Creative Conners automated systems
• Strong interpersonal skills and motivation while working in a team or independently
• Ability to adapt to frequently changing circumstances and work collaboratively with other employees
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
• Willing to climb and work from lifts/ ladders and comfortable working at heights
• Ability to stand and work on your feet for much of the day
• Performance schedule requires working nights and weekends and may also include holidays
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• This is a seasonal, full-time role reporting to the Technical Director
• Compensation: $19.25/hour
