OCT was created by Sondra Pearlman as the "Theatre for Young People" under the auspices of the Portland Civic Theatre in 1988. When Portland Civic Theatre closed its doors in 1990, Pearlman formed Oregon Children's Theatre with the goal of providing children their first exposure to theater and the performing arts through field trip performances. Since that start, the company has grown and evolved by adding public family performances and thriving arts education programs. Since 1991, OCT has been a resident company at Portland’5 Centers for the Arts (stylized with that moniker due to its five performing spaces located within the center). All OCT Main Stage productions are performed in Portland’5 Centers for the Arts’ 850-seat Newmark Theater or 304-seat Winningstad Theatre. YP Company performances are presented at various locations throughout the city. OCT Acting Academy classes are held at Curious Comedy Theater and Multnomah Arts Center.
