The Glimmerglass Festival seeks a Lighting Director for its 2024 Festival season.
The Lighting Director is the Department Head who directly leads a four-person lighting supervision team (two Lighting Supervisors, one Lighting Supervisor Apprentice, and the Lighting Programmer) and also oversees a 13 person electrics team (one Production Electrician, two Assistant Production Electricians, six Staff Electricians, and four Electrics Apprentices); the position reports to the Director of Production.
The primary goals of the position include facilitating the execution of the lighting designs for four (4) mainstage operas, a youth opera, and various concerts and events in repertory. Prior to the on-site work, the lighting director is responsible for combining each lighting designer’s plot into one repertory plot for the season, bidding the season rental package (entire light rig is rented) while managing the cuts and substitutions process in communication with the designers, and budgeting and coordinating the set electrics needs for each show. They are responsible for hiring the Lighting Supervision Department.
During the season, the Lighting Director oversees the installation of each lighting design, and ensures that each designer’s vision is being achieved to the best of the department’s ability. They interface with the Designers on updates and changes. They directly manage the Production Electrician, Lighting Programmer, Lighting Supervisors and Lighting Supervision Apprentice. The Lighting Director’s job includes department scheduling, facilitating communication between Lighting Supervisors, design teams, and Electrics staff, training as needed, interfacing with design teams and other departments regarding projects and work notes.
The ideal candidate has experience in repertory lighting systems and lighting design and/or associate design. In addition, they have experience managing budgets and department leadership. The Lighting Director needs strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to handle multiple tasks at once, and the ability to delegate tasks efficiently among staff. Strong experience in Vectorworks, Lightwright, and ETC Eos systems required. The ideal candidate also has experience with Vectorworks plugins, SpotOn, Moving Light Assistant, Vor, and other lighting industry softwares. Experience working in opera is a plus.
This position requires collaborative work within the lighting supervisor department, as well as with the design teams and electrics. Preseason work will require independent work and remote collaboration with the design team and Production Electrician. The responsibilities of this position require the employee to be physically present on campus from mid-May through opening of the last show. Pre-season work starts in November and is handled remotely.

This position begins part-time, remotely, and is stipend-based ($4000.00 total) from November until May. The position then runs in person from May 13th to August 20th 2024 . $1250.00/week. Includes $200.00 Summer travel reimbursement, and housing provided.
