Join our Education Department this summer as an Artist in Training (AIT) and be part of our vibrant summer camp team! Reliable transportation is a must, as you'll be an integral part of the action on-site during camp hours.
Responsibilities
• Collaborate with and support the education staff, Director of Education, and Lead/Assistant Teaching Artists to ensure a successful, safe summer camp, while supporting lesson plans aligned with the theme of the camp classes.
• Attend and contribute to training and planning meetings with Education staff
• Receive constructive feedback from education staff and adjust lesson plans and facilitation as needed
• Engage in daily interaction with students, parents, and caretakers
• Under the direction of the education staff, understand, respectfully communicate, and facilitate alignment with all summer camp guidelines and policies as set forth by McCarter
• Respond to email, phone, and in-person correspondence in a timely manner
• Foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment for all students, assisting with adjusting and adapting lessons as needed based on individual student-needs
• With calm and precision, assist in executing appropriate emergency procedures in the event of an emergency.
• Support the Education Associate and Director of Education with administrative duties, as needed
• Initiate a positive experience while communicating with a diverse student base, including the embodiment of McCarter’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility (EDIA), and Antiracism expectations for both staff and campers.
• Follow safe working practices while embodying McCarter safety and code of conduct policies.
Work Environment
• Led by our core values, McCarter fosters and expects a culture of care and respect for the wellbeing of our staff.
• May need to lift and carry items up to 10lbs.
• Will need to move and engage in physical activity for long periods of time e.g. 4 – 5-hour intervals
• Work will be completed in multiple spaces and rooms, including outdoors, at 91 University Pl., and some locations on Princeton University’s campus, in Princeton, NJ.
Qualifications
• Availability to work summer camp hours, June 17th – August 16th, (Skipping the week of July 1st) Monday – Friday, 8:45 am – 3:15 pm, and attend planning meetings as needed.
• Possess a positive, energetic, and inclusive attitude that makes all campers and staff feel safe and welcomed
• Some previous teaching experience with K-10th grade students
• Experience working collaboratively within a team, while also functioning independently as needed
• Possesses a confident and approachable personality
• Attention to detail and proactive nature
• Ability to problem solve creatively, in a time-sensitive environment
• Must be a team player and thrive in a collaborative environment with a good sense of humor
• Interest in the values and practices that can help build and sustain an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace
• Open to collaborate with diverse needs, personalities, and work styles with optimism and a solution discovery mindset
Preferred Qualifications
• CPR/AED/First-Aid Certification
• Bilingual in English and Spanish, or other languages
• Experience in working with students with unique learning needs
