Job Description
The General Manager oversees company management, box office/ticket services, artists contracting and relations, and all theater rentals. Reporting to the Executive Director and a key member of the senior staff, the General Manager will supervise the Company Managers, the Director of Ticket Services and the Associate General Manager. The General Manager is responsible for managing and negotiating contracts with artists within union regulations and established budgets and balancing these practical needs with the artistic vision and integrity of all Second Stage productions.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Build an annual calendar, plan, and budget to support the full season and maintain our theaters and companies in a safe and healthy manner.
• Manage and maintain all general management financial reports, including budgets, settlements, and weekly royalty reports. Ensure that all contract terms are reflected in production budgets.
• Negotiate and supervise all collective bargaining agreements with the trade unions (AEA/SDC/USA/IATSE/ATPAM) within union regulations and established budgets.
• Oversee all aspects of contracting artists (actors, playwrights, musicians, directors, designers, stage managers, etc.) and any applicable assistants / associates.
• Along with the Executive Director, negotiate terms for artists commissions, presentations, co-productions, and enhancements.
• Negotiate theater rental contracts and oversee event rental fulfillment in theater spaces. Liaise with internal departments and external vendors as necessary to provide production support for event rentals.
• Select outside vendors for artists housing and transportation.
• Proof all marketing materials to ensure they align with contractual obligations.
• Work with ticketing and marketing staff on ticketing and pricing strategies.
• Maintain a nurturing workplace environment for all general management personnel, and embrace diversity equity and inclusion initiatives when recruiting, onboarding, and supervising all staff members within your departments.
• Maintain close rapport with the Executive Director on all financial reporting matters by providing timely information.
• Maintain a close working relationship with Director of Human Resources, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in honoring the spirit of all of our DEI initiatives.
• Be familiar with mission of Second Stage and our core values.
• Attend finance, marketing, and board committee meetings as requested.
• As a member of Senior Staff, work with the senior management team to schedule and plan each season and develop strategic plans for the future.
• Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Skills & Qualifications
• 5 years at the senior management level preferably at a performing arts organization with a $10 million+ operating budget.
• Extensive knowledge of the AEA/SDC/USA Agreements and experience with NYC trade locals, as well as LORT.
• Extensive knowledge of all areas of theater rental contracts, preferably in NYC.
• General understanding of technical aspects involved in box office/ticket services.
• Demonstrated experience in budget development and management.
• A strong working knowledge of the relationships between commercial producing entities and the non-profit theater.
• Experience with Microsoft Office is required, experience with Tessitura is preferred.
• Excellent communication, presentation and analytical skills.
• Exceptional supervisory and management capabilities.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize, track and manage multiple high priority tasks at a given time.
• Outstanding judgment and an ability to make decisions in a timely fashion after consulting multiple stakeholders.
• Ability to look at complex problems and/or opportunities in a creative and innovative manner.
• Desire to challenge traditional thought in order to find efficiencies and improve performance.
• Strong drive to establish systems and prioritize projects.
• Experience with information management systems/software.
• Ability to work with a variety of different people and to remain calm under pressure.
• A sense of humor.
Additional Information
Compensation: Base salary starting at $105,000 annually
