The University of Montevallo Department of Theatre is seeking to fill a full time temporary, one term position in the area of Technical Direction for Spring semester 2022 (1/7/2022-5/13/2022, posted salary is for the working period, not an annual figure). This position requires 6CR of course assignments (two sections of THEA 250 Stagecraft I), plus 3 cumulative credit hours of 1CR Applied Theatre course sections (Freshman Level II shared with other Technical Theatre faculty, Scenic, and Sound). The Visiting Instructor also receives a course release for production administrative work serving as the Technical Director for time not connected to student instruction. Duties include:
Interpret scene design drawings and create construction drawings.
Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
Determine the necessary technical supports, such as sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
Advise Chair, lighting and designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs.
Supervise and assist with set and stage construction and management.
Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
Assist with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized supplies.
Participate in student technical crew staffing interviews at the start of the semester.
Attend weekly production meetings.
Attend technical Week rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting the show.
Required Qualifications:
MFA in Technical Direction or significant professional experience at the regional level.
University-level teaching experience (Graduate Assistantship experience included).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in new technologies- digital media programming/design, digital fabrication, etc.
Interest in student mentorship towards a professional career in Theatre/Entertainment production.
