Finance Manager
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Finance, the Finance Manager serves as a key member of Steppenwolf’s Finance Department. The Finance Manager supports the business by maintaining the backbone of Steppenwolf’s accounting and reporting systems. The Finance Manager is responsible for conducting efficient month-end closes, including providing reports and analysis for Steppenwolf’s diverse constituents. The Finance Manager is a key force in maintaining processes and conducting reviews to ensure that Steppenwolf’s controls are being followed, leading to accurate and timely financial reporting.
Areas of Responsibility:
Monthly Close
• Prepares journal entries outlined on the monthly close checklist
• Reconciles fixed asset schedule to general ledger
• Prepares balance sheet schedules
• Prepares bank and investment reconciliations
• Reconciles revenue between GL and CRM system
• Collects information and prepare entries for one-time transactions as needed
Budgets
• Assists Assistant Director of Finance with development and compilation of the annual operating budget as needed
• Enters budgets into accounting software and reconciles to annual operating budget
Accounting and General Ledger System
• Assists Assistant Director of Finance in maintenance and upkeep of general ledger and chart of accounts
• Updates chart and accounts for upcoming seasons and communicates changes to departments
• Prepares reports and analyses from accounting system to monitor and track charges and expenditures on a monthly basis or as needed
• Keeps Assistant Director of Finance aware of potential problem areas or opportunities noted in analyses
• Oversees correction of any inaccuracies discovered
Account Payable
• Reviews accounts payable sessions weekly and reconciles to general ledger
• Reconciles accounts payable transactions to electronic requisition transactions
• Ensures clean cut-off of expenditures from month-to-month
• Supports Finance Coordinator in the creation and maintenance of vendor files in accounting system
• Assists Finance Coordinator in organizing A/P checks for signing and following up with staff on unpaid invoices
Payroll
• Reviews payroll sessions bi-weekly and as needed
• Prepares cash requirements report for cash flow planning
• Sets up and maintains labor allocations and department coding in payroll system
• Imports bi-weekly payroll GL file into accounting system
• Supports and backs up Finance Coordinator with payroll system processing and maintenance
• Reconciles benefit billing to GL reconciliation
Accounts and Pledges Receivable
• Prepares invoices for miscellaneous events held at the Theatre
• Records invoices in accounting records and monitors collections
• Reconciles pledge balances to development department reports
Audits and Regulatory Reporting
• Prepares and maintains schedules for annual financial statement audit
• Assists Finance team with financial statement audit prep as needed
• Assists Finance team with Workers Compensation audit prep as needed
• Prepares and maintains schedules for annual Form 990 tax return
• Assists Assistant Director of Finance in the preparation of financial components for grant application and reporting
Other Responsibilities
• Supports ongoing financial training sessions for non-finance staff
• Assists with the analysis and optimization of systems and reporting interfaces
Successful candidates will have:
• Experience in a non-profit office (preferred), with the responsibilities listed above
• A working knowledge of US GAAP and fund accounting
• The ability to juggle moving priorities and be a team player
• Excellent attention to detail, keen organizational skills, and accuracy in managing data and deadlines
• The ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and a capacity to work independently
• Effective communication with supervisors and colleagues on the status and priority of assignments
• The ability to organize, analyze, present, and communicate finance data
• A commitment to working with diverse groups in terms of gender expression, race, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, class, and immigrant status

Desired Qualifications:
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs with Excel being the priority
• Experience with MIP Fund Accounting a plus
• Experience with Tessitura or comparable CRM a plus
