Job Title: Director of Production and Venue Operations

Job Overview: The Director of Production & Venue Operations oversees all aspects of the technical elements, personnel, schedules, and logistics for all productions on the New York City Center Mainstage and Rehearsal Studios including back of house and front of house operations. This position is a strategic leader, problem solver and liaison between administrative, artistic, production, and FOH personnel. The Director is expected to demonstrate a passion for production work and theater operations while upholding City Center’s mission, and our commitment to being an anti-racist organization.
Job Responsibilities
• Serve as a critical liaison between administrative, artistic, and building personnel in the preparation and execution of all mainstage programming, studio programming, and events.
• Lead the production process for all programming and events in a thoughtful, calm, and collaborative manner.
• Bring the creative vision to life for each production while ensuring budgets are adhered to and additional unexpected costs are minimized.
• Foster a work environment that is supportive, collegial, respectful, and open to diverse perspectives and opinions.
• Oversee the preparation and management of department budgets, labor estimates, and monthly reconciliation.
• Identify needs and participate in the hiring of freelance production personnel.
• Supervise, manage, and assign the work of the Production & Venue Operations department managers in the preparation of all production calendars, schedules, staffing, and work assignments for all productions and performances.
• Guide the department managers in the supervision, development, and training of the union stagehands, teamsters, ushers, house managers, wardrobe, hair/make-up, and other technical and Front of House workers.
• Advise the VP & COO in union contract matters and participate in the negotiation of all theatrical union collective bargaining agreements.
• In partnership with the VP & COO, collaborate on the annual budgeting process and reforecasting throughout each fiscal year.
This Role Requires:
• 10+ years of technical experience in theater and/or dance
• Extensive experience in production management and theater operations
• Proficient understand of IATSE, USA, Teamsters, AGMA, TWU, and AEA collective bargaining agreements
• F03 Fireguard Certification for Indoor Place of Public Assembly from the FDNY within 3 months of employment
• Scheduling flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays during performances
To be successful in this role, you will be expected to demonstrate:
• Strong leadership skills effective for a mixed environment of both union and non-union employees
• Proficiency with various software programs including: MS Office Suite, Production and Venue Management Software, Payroll Software, Vectorworks, and Filemaker Pro
• Ability to write schedules, manage budgets, and make decisions that proactively control expenses and ensure smooth operations
• Ability to approach work with a spirit of collaboration and cooperation
• Project management skills and the ability to oversee multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
• Ability to lift 35 lbs. and stay on your feet most of the workday
