The Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York is seeking a new Director of Musical Theater Programs. This is a part-time seasonal position with an annual stipend. The Stella Adler Musical Theater Department combines core Adler training, fundamental musical theater skills taught by working professionals, and an immersion into the development of new musical theater pieces.
What sets this program apart is the close attention it pays to acting and the rigor of acting required to make musical theater performance transcend performance and become a powerful exploration of the human experience, in which the form uses song to highlight the urgent need to express something beyond speech alone. The department provides rigorous musical theater training anchored in the core belief of the Stella Adler Studio, that growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous. Impassioned acting rooted in craft is most essential in the pivotal moment when a scene becomes a song.
The Director of Musical Theater Programs’ key responsibility is for the organization and execution of the two flagship musical theater training programs at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting: the 2-Week Musical Theater Winter Immersion and the 5-week Summer Musical Theater Intensive. Combining current Broadway professionals with the studio’s master teachers, the Musical Theater Intensive is a one-of-a-kind experience that integrates performance and analysis of the musical theater form with training in voice and speech, movement for the actor, and effective audition techniques. Designed for the professional actor with requisite skills in song and dance, the Musical Theater Intensive immerses students into a deeper, more precise understanding of their acting ability and development of acting skills while connecting their work with the rest of the world.
In addition to running the two flagship programs, the Director of Musical Theater Programs will also work closely with the Artistic Director in developing new initiatives for training the future generation of Broadway talent as well as developing new works.
Responsibilities include administering all aspects of the musical theater program activity including:
- Identifying faculty and proposing faculty to leadership.
- Recruiting/auditioning prospective students and coordinating with the admissions team
- Project managing the launch and delivery of training programs such as the two flagship courses: the 2-Week Musical Theater Winter Immersion and the 5-week Summer Musical Theater Intensive.
