JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB PURPOSE:
The Director of Education will provide direction and oversight of the Education department’s strategic vision through the development of curriculum and programs for the Humphrey’s School of Musical Theatre (HSMT), The River, and Community Engagement; thereby providing students and communities with equitable access to the arts and arts education and the opportunity to learn the skills they need to grow as artists and as individuals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Programs/Staff
• Recruit & develop a professional full-time faculty of teachers who support and deliver on the Education department’s mission and strategic goals.
o Sets standards for professional behavior, counsels and evaluates professional staff on an ongoing basis
• Evaluation of programs on a regular basis for effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability and the ability to replicate results.
• Provide direction for the development of curriculum, learning objectives and sequencing, and achievement indicators for all HSMT course offerings.
• Leads department meetings on an ongoing basis to measure and evaluate education program effectiveness
• Maintains school disciplinary policy in a consistent and respectful manner
• Collaborate with Artistic Line Producer on The Tommy Tune Awards, School shows, Gala performances and all mainstage performance opportunities for students.
• Oversee and provide vision and direction for The-Professional Company.
Enrollment/Operations
• Represents and promotes the TUTS Musical Theatre Academy program to prospective families.
• Oversees the recruitment of students and develops a schedule of speaking engagements and recruitment tools within the community.
• Continues to support and balance the mission of The River with meaningful integration throughout The TUTS Musical Theatre Academy and within TUTS.
• Partners with marketing to ensure the education department is supported through various marketing avenues, including materials and social networks.
• Partners with Development & Institutional Advancement to ensure Education programs are showcased effectively while collaborating on opportunities for grants and other fundraising sources.
• Will be the liaison between TUTS and The Board’s Education Committee and attends all full Board meetings.
Finance
• Works with the Executive Director and Artistic Director to develop a long-range strategic plan for the Department, including goals and budgets for Education, reflecting realistic and achievable growth for the programs year over year.
• Develops & scrupulously monitors the budget and expenditures for the department.
Community
• Continues to develop and oversee the TUTS Community Engagement programs – The Tommy Tunes Awards, Spotlight Series, Kinder High School for the Performing Arts (HSPVA) Musical Theatre instruction, Accessibility programs and Community Works (formerly Public Works).
• Maintains constructive liaisons with other educational institutions and associations in Houston and nationally.
• Participates in TUTS events that help promote the mission of arts education.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Undergraduate degree in a related field with considerable experience in education program management.
• Master’s or other graduate degree or Broadway/National Theatre experience looked upon favorably.
• Knowledge of, experience in, and strong passion for musical theater.
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain a sound perspective, essential for maintaining healthy relationships with co-workers.
• Knowledge of Microsoft 365 preferred.
