The Old Globe, a year-round professional theatre company producing 14 or more productions annually on three stages in beautiful Balboa Park in San Diego, seeks candidates for a Design Assistant to join our talented Costume Department.
Under the direction of the Costume Director, the Resident Design Assistant is responsible for helping achieve the Costume Designer’s vision. They work closely with the Designer, the Costume Director and the other Design Assistants. They are responsible for shopping both in stores and online for costume pieces, fabrics, and all specifics needed for the production of costumes for assigned show. The position requires strong communication with crafts artisans, wig makers, and wardrobe staff to deliver the design on-schedule, and within budget. From the beginning stages of the design process through tech, opening, and understudy fittings, this is an essential member of the Costume team. The position requires strong organizational skills to produce appropriate paperwork for each assigned show, as well as keep records of all purchases, receipts, and returns. The Design assistant is actively involved in costume stock, including pulling for shows, restocking, and maintenance of the space.
Candidates should demonstrate 3-5 years progressive work in the field. The successful candidate will have experience in a professional theater costume department, as well as design assistant work with Broadway and Regional Theater Costume Designers. Candidates need a strong knowledge of clothing, both contemporary and historical, plus an understanding of fabrics and how they behave. Must be able to communicate in a professional manner with designers, directors, actors, as well as all members of the costume team. This position requires evening and weekend hours during tech and previews. Candidates must have an active driver license and be comfortable driving in San Diego.
This position is full-time with benefits including 401(k). This is an hourly non-exempt position with required overtime. The hourly rate is $24.00 - $26.00 with an estimated salary of $50,000 - $60,000 including expected overtime. Bilingual English/Spanish speaking is a plus and multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
