ABOUT THE POSITION
The Costume Designer/Wardrobe Supervisor is responsible for designing and assembling costume plots for ongoing productions as well as maintaining organization of the wardrobe department including the costume shop and offsite costume storage.
Responsibilities:
Develop costume plots with production designers and Director, studying script and performing research on historical periods and regions.
Oversee processes (i.e. constructing, purchasing, pulling, renting etc.) related to assembling all pieces required for costuming of ongoing productions including those within Conservatory and Professional seasons.
Execute designs within budget and timeline, meeting benchmarks set forth by Production Stage Manager.
Maintain the collection of costumes and accessories within Area Stage Company’s wardrobe (both in storage and the costume shop on premises) by documenting new items added to the wardrobe, updating any changes to current items, mending costumes, and supervising the purchasing/lending of items.
Manage cross-seasonal costume budgets for supplies and shop maintenance.
Attend production meetings, rehearsals, fittings, tech rehearsals, and previews as needed.
Bear all responsibilities related to the scheduling and facilitation of costume fittings and costume parade.
Tag the costumes and accessories and keep costume racks up-to-date so as to include only costumes currently being used for the production.
Record all notes from the Director in an organized fashion, sharing notes with the production team and applying them to the best of their abilities.
Apply notes throughout the performance run, making adjustments to costumes as necessary.
Communicate and coordinate with Production Stage Manager any show-related needs including, but not limited to, entrance and exit plots, costume presets, quick change stations other and run-of-show needs.
During performances, supervise wardrobe crew and volunteers, assigning dressers to specific cast members to ensure that actors are wearing the costumes properly as dictated by costume plot and that costumes are in good repair and free of wrinkles/lint/hanging threads, etc.
Arrange for the cleaning of costumes, pulling any laundry items at the end of performances and return all costume items to proper locations within costume storage and costume shop.
Qualifications
Capable of making bold, creative design choices that are supported by the text.
1 year minimum experience in wardrobe or related position.
Strong knowledge base of wardrobe maintenance and laundry.
Some experience styling and maintaining wigs.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
Strong problem solving and ability to work under pressure.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively throughout all levels of an organization using verbal, written formal and informal methods.
Consistent application of confidentiality, discretion, diplomacy, and tact.
Able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Must speak English fluently. Bi-lingual candidates preferred.
Able to create detailed paperwork on Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Familiarity across Apple/Mac and Windows.
Preferred skills include:
Stitching and alteration skills.
Experience with makeup.
