BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is a home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas—engaging both global and local communities with world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more. With an annual operating budget of approximately $50 million —the majority dedicated directly or indirectly to programming—BAM is a leading presenter of emerging and contemporary artists.
The role of the Budget Manager is to serve as a strategic and tactical partner for aspects of BAM’s finance, accounting, and budget operations.
The Budget Manager role requires the ability to:
• Ensure BAM’s financial stability through continual analysis and evaluation of the overall financial health of the organization with resulting recommendations for improvement being provided to the Senior Director of Finance and Executive staff
• Develop and implement successful strategies for Finance systems and process improvements
• Ensure that all financial activities are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), internal policies, and regulatory requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Planning & Control:
• Develop and prepare annual budget in collaboration with the senior management team.
• Provide monthly budget variance analysis to executive staff.
• Develop annual operating cash flow and working capital requirements and revise monthly.
• Work with Capital Projects staff to monitor budget status of capital projects.
• Respond to inquiries from internal stakeholders across the organization regarding budgets and spending. Troubleshoot and resolve problems and issues.
• Analyze labor budgets for collective bargaining negotiations by creating multiple budget scenarios for various labor strategies.
Accounting & Financial Reporting:
• Provide and direct record-keeping procedures and systems with necessary controls.
• Perform journal entries for costs allocations and revenue re-classification, set-up project codes and enter budget modifications in Multiview financial software.
• Assess financial position and issue monthly internal reports.
• Prepare quarterly financial reports together with the senior manager of FP&A for the BAM Finance Committee and Board of Trustees
• Identify ways to improve efficiency in BAM’s business processes and implement new processes.
• Respond to requests for Ad hoc budget reporting, financial analysis, special projects, and other similar duties as requested.
• Prepare fiscal year end accruals for the capital projects.
• Respond to BAM’s requisition requests to funding agencies.
• Develop and conduct budget training sessions for internal stakeholders across the organization.
Tax and Audit:
• Support annual financial audit for BAM and BET
• Complete quarterly trial balance review for assigned accounts.
• Prepare PBC schedules for assigned account for an annual financial audit.
• Prepare annual audited financials for the BAM & BET Audit Committees
Decision Support:
• Analyze operational issues impacting functional groups and the institution and determine their financial impact.
• Enhance and/or develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures that will improve overall operations and effectiveness.
• Identify areas where use of data could be strengthened to increase efficiency or otherwise yield better, more timely management information (not limited to the Finance area)
• Represent BAM’s current decisions and strategy in internal meetings.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILIITES
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in financial management and controls
• Knowledge of the not-for-profit environment required.
• Analytical ability to see the big picture as it relates to financial and business matters.
• Collaborative working style
• Ability to communicate complex financial information in a clear, concise manner.
• Ability to communicate with entry-level Finance staff as well as Board-level representatives.
• Technical proficiency with finance and accounting systems
• Exceptional oral, written, presentation, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Impeccable integrity and strong judgment; ability to make decisions among competing priorities.
• Sensitivity to and support of BAM’s mission statement, interest in the arts preferred.
• Knowledge of current generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
• Ability to interact effectively with executive staff.
• Excellent leadership skills: ability to rally the staff and build consensus.
• Demonstrated success in an entrepreneurial environment bringing new and creative ideas from conception to implementation.
• Ability to navigate many different levels of BAM’s staffing structure to effect positive change.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to supporting and advancing a diverse team. Experienced in DEI concepts, programs, and initiatives.
• Ability to negotiate and collaborate with colleagues to arrive at optimal decisions.
• Ability to positively motivate staff and retain high performing individuals.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to sit for long periods of time but will require some movement while in-person. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
COMPENSATION: Salary will range between $75,000 - $80,000 annually commensurate with years of experience. This position is full-time exempt and eligible for benefits.
