In the 2016/2017 Season, our series entitled "Perspectives beyond Generation: the Power of Japanese Drama" will see three spirited directors in their 30s staging three major plays that laid the foundation for modern Japanese drama. For the first of these, TANI Kenichi is taking on MISHIMA Yukio in his debut at the New National Theatre, Tokyo.
"The Nest of White Ants" was MISHIMA's first feature-length play; the success of this work established his position as a playwright. Penned ten years after the war for the Seinenza Theater Company, this work is permeated with MISHIMA's sense of emptiness in post-war Japan. Set your expectations high for TANI's presentation of this controversial story in light of what it meant to MISHIMA and what MISHIMA's lifelong quest was.
