For the third production in the "Perspectives beyond Generation: the Power of Japanese Drama" series, OGAWA Eriko will be directing NAKATA Chikao's "The Head of Mary: Nagasaki as Theophany".
Focusing on the lives of three girls in post-war Nagasaki and portraying dialogues with God and prayers for peace, this work was awarded the Kishida Prize for Drama and the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts in 1959. Some people try to forget their experiences of the war and the bombing, while others remain scarred and will not let those memories fade. These various ideas are portrayed poetically and sometimes philosophically.
What was "war"? What is "the meaning of life"? Director OGAWA Eriko, recognised for all of her detailed portrayals of raw human relationships, confronts the theme of "war". This is not to be missed.
