The work is said to be one of the best opera buffas (comic operas) composed by Gioachino ROSSINI. This opera is based on "Le Barbier de Séville", the first of the "Figaro Trilogy" by Pierre BEAUMARCHAIS. The second is "La Folle Journée, ou Le Mariage de Figaro" on which MOZART's "Le Nozze di Figaro" is based. (In case you were wondering, the third is "La Mère Coupable").
Director Josef E. KÖPPLINGER (currently the Artistic Director of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich) has adapted the setting of this work to suit a bright comic opera, shifting it from 18th century Seville to 1960s Seville under the Franco regime.
