In this special series, we present the dancers of the National Ballet of Japan performing in contemporary dance productions. For the fourth installment of the series, we will present works by Kanamori Jo and Nakamura Megumi. Both Kanamori and Nakamura spent time in Europe, dancing with such companies as Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT). Since returning to Japan, they have continued to actively pursue their creative endeavors here.
Kanamori Jo's solo for 2 was premiered by his company Noism1 in March 2012 as a revised version of Academic, presented in 2009 at NNTT as the first part of his work Zone - shimmer/thunder/moon on the water. This is the thired work of Kanamori performed by NBJ.
Nakamura Megumi worked with Shuto Yasuyuki to create Shakespeare The Sonnets, a production in which a suite of Shakespeare sonnets were set to dance. It was the season opener of the 2011/2012 dance season at the NNTT. With its masterful composition and expressive qualities, Shakespeare The Sonnets garnered rave reviews from audiences and critics alike.
