The BROADWAY MUSICAL Wicked: This work reimagines the classic "The Wizard of Oz" from the perspectives of two witches, Elphaba and Glinda. It emphasizes the importance of respecting different ways of life and the strength to choose one's own path, leaving audiences deeply moved. The musical is a grand spectacle, featuring Grammy-winning music, dazzling costumes, and magnificent stage designs, continuing to captivate fans of all ages.


In the Land of Oz, where humans and animals converse and live together in harmony, animals gradually begin to lose their ability to speak. Elphaba, with her green skin and magical powers, enrolls at Shiz University and becomes roommates with the beautiful and popular Glinda. Initially, the two clash due to their stark differences, but they eventually come to understand each other and form an inseparable bond.One day, Elphaba receives an invitation from the Wizard, the ruler of Oz, and sets off for the Emerald City with Glinda. There, Elphaba uncovers a grave secret and decides to fight alone, while Glinda is elevated as a symbol of hope for the people of Oz. As their friendship is torn apart by fate, they are driven towards inevitable conflict.

The performance begins with a foreboding opening number. On stage, a massive dragon with glowing red eyes comes to life, and eerie monkeys swing down on ropes, startling the audience right from the start. Sae Yamamoto, who plays Glinda, delivers a confident high-pitched vibrato that resonates throughout the theater from the opening. The rich harmony with the ensemble sets the tone, foreshadowing the tragic events to come.

As Elphaba, Masae Ebata showcases her overwhelming vocal and expressive abilities in the Shiz University scene. Her powerful performance in "The Wizard and I" stands out, captivating the audience's hearts. Meanwhile, the lively and heart-pumping "Dancing Through Life" envelops the theater in a joyful and free-spirited atmosphere.

In "Popular," overflowing with comedic sense, Glinda's bright and charming character is fully displayed, spreading laughter throughout the audience. 

As the story progresses, Elphaba and Glinda meet the Wizard in the Emerald City. It is here that Elphaba learns the truth, leading to a pivotal moment of resolve. In the climactic finale of the first act, Masae's rendition of "Defying Gravity" is nothing short of breathtaking. The sight of her soaring into the air, coupled with her powerful vocals, leaves an indelible impression on everyone watching.

Moreover, in "No Good Deed," Elphaba's inner turmoil is masterfully portrayed by Masae’s intense acting, leaving the audience holding their breath as they witness the scene unfold.

The finale showcases the true bond of friendship between Elphaba and Glinda in the song "For Good," where their beautiful harmonies deeply resonate with the audience.

The ensemble's high level of skill is also a highlight. Particularly in the choral scenes, where their voices come together, the dynamic energy fills the entire venue, drawing the audience in with irresistible force. The stage set is equally impressive, pulling the audience into its powerful world the moment they enter the theater.

SHIKI THEATRE COMPANY’s musical "Wicked," performed in Osaka for the first time in 15 years, is a masterpiece that brilliantly fuses the depth of its story with lavish staging. The outstanding performances by Masae Ebata and Sae Yamamoto, along with the awe-inspiring music and visuals, provided the audience with a profound sense of wonder and emotion. This production breathes new life into Osaka's theater scene and will undoubtedly continue to captivate many more audiences in the future.
