Hatsudai Art Loft's new exhibition "A Fantastical World of Creatures and Plants" is on display in The National Theatre Tokyo's open space from October 2023 to late February 2024.

"Hatsudai Art Loft" is a space where you can enjoy the art working relating to theatre. This time, under the title 'A Fantastical World of Creatures and Plants', the exhibition explores the extraordinary worlds that have been created by the performing arts, through costumes.

The impact of the World Expositions in the mid-19th century led to an exotic boom. World cultural exchanges were a milestone in cultural and industrial development for many countries, with the West being attracted to the East and the East to the West, creating new cultures and industries for the future. The exhibition includes the operas Madame Butterfly (premiered 1998), Yuzuru (premiered 2000) and Asters (premiered 2019), and the ballets Bonsho No Koe (premiered 1998), The Nutcracker (premiered 1998), La Bayadère (premiered 2000), Aladdin (premiered 2008) and The Prince of the Pagodas (premiered 2011). Through these costumes, visitors can fully enjoy a worldview that reflects the eccentric imaginations of the Orient and Japan, as well as a lively and imaginary space that resembles an autumn/winter festival with installations.

In this exhibition, installations resembling mosaics are scattered throughout the exhibition space, creating spatial art inspired by the operas and ballets in each booth. Please take a look at the world of art that adds expression not only to the costumes and characters but also to the spatial design. In addition to the actual costumes and objects, more than 200 photographs of them on display can be seen on the exhibition panels. Please also enjoy the world expressed through the filter of the camera.
