Lumen Repertory Theatre today announced the first production of its Subversive 2025 Season: Agnes of God by John Pielmeier. This provocative, psychological drama will run from March 14 to March 29  at San Marco Church, offering audiences a deeply complex exploration of faith, innocence, and mental health.

First premiering on Broadway in 1982 and later adapted into a film starring Jane Fonda, Agnes of God is a timeless and gripping work that challenges the boundaries between belief and reason. The play follows the harrowing case of a young novice nun accused of infanticide, as a court-appointed psychiatrist and the convent’s Mother Superior engage in a battle over faith, trauma, and the search for truth. Pielmeier’s script unflinchingly questions the rigidity of religious dogma in the face of personal suffering, making it a bold and fitting start to Lumen Rep’s most subversive season yet.

“As we launch our 2025 season, we are diving into the kind of theatre that disrupts assumptions and forces us to confront difficult questions,” said Lumen Repertory Theatre Artistic Director Brian Niece*. “Agnes of God is an extraordinary piece of storytelling that makes us interrogate the nature of faith, truth, and innocence in ways that are deeply unsettling—and that’s exactly the kind of theatre Lumen Rep brings to Jacksonville.”

The powerhouse cast and creative team for Agnes of God includes Maggie Cox, Katie Johnston, and Karen Konzen, co-directed by Joshua Britton Andrews and Brian Niece, with a production team of Camala Pitts, Claire Cimino, and Mike Livingston bringing this hauntingly intimate drama to life.

This production of Agnes of God promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience, challenging perceptions, igniting discussion, and setting the stage for a season that continues with David Mamet’s American Buffalo in late spring and the world premiere of Michael Jacobs’ Harlan and Bronna Jump Out the Window in the fall.

All performances will be held at the historic San Marco Church located at 1620 Naldo Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32207. The dates and times are as follows:
