The 2015-2016 School of Theatre Season will close with Henrik Ibsen's infamous Hedda Gabler, directed by Fred Chappell. One of the world's most famous literary heroines, aristocrat Hedda pushes the boundaries of what she can convince others to do in the name of love and shows the world that love, in the wrong hands, can result in greatness and in catastrophe. Hedda Gabler is playing in the Lab Theatre March 25-April 3.

This production features School of Theatre students Cara Clough as the infamous Hedda Gabler. She is joined by Cecil Jennings (Eilert Lovborg), Steven Carter (George Tesman), and MFA Directing candidate Christine Hansen (Aunt Julia). Hedda Gabler also features scenic design by guest artist Ruth A. Brandvik, costume design by MFA Costume Design candidate Ariel Couture, lighting design by Adam Rose, and dramaturgy by MA Theatre Studies candidate Shelby Lunderman.

Director Fred Chappell reflects on the production saying, "Ibsen's Hedda Gabler presents an intriguing historical investigation of feminist issues and the suppression of women during the mid-nineteenth century. We are setting our production in the South during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War in order to examine the play's relevance to the plight of women in our own country."

Hedda Gabler was written and first performed in Munich, Germany in 1891 and in that same year, the first British performance was at the Vaudeville Theatre, London, starring Elizabeth Robins. Robins also played Hedda in the first US production, which opened on March 30, 1898, at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City. The Roundabout Theatre Company presented a Broadway revival of Hedda Gabler in 2009 starring Tony Award® -winner Mary-Louise Parker at the American Airlines Theatre.
