The School of Theatre at Florida State University presents Ragtime, written by Terrence McNally with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and based on the novel "Ragtime" by E.L. Doctorow. Ragtime will be directed by Fred Chappell, head of the MFA Directing program at Florida State University. The show features a musical selection as diverse as New York City, from the ragtime rhythms of Harlem to the bold brass band and up-tempo banjo tunes characterizing America at the turn of the century.

Witness the dawning of a new century in New York City and the struggles that come with, in the Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime. Ragtime follows the intertwining stories of three different American families. The families, an African-American family, a Jewish immigrant family, and a wealthy, suburban family are united through their love, loss, and courage.

This production features New York-based Equity Actor, Garfield Hammonds (Coalhouse Walker Jr.), and School of Theatre students Tanisha Moore (Sarah), Danny Burgos (Tateh), and Katie Bottomley (Mother). Ragtime features scenic design by School of Theatre alum Caite Hevner Kemp, costume design by MFA Costume Design candidate Sarah Jahnke, and lighting design by guest artist, Nick Solyom.

Ragtime made its Broadway debut on January 18, 1998, starring Brian Stokes Mitchell as Coalhouse Walker Jr. and Audra McDonald as Sarah, a performance for which she won a Tony Award. The show was revived at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York in 2009 to critical acclaim.
