While it's typically always a family-friendly environment at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining, the summer show annually provides slightly lighter fare for those on Summer break. Shows like Cinderella and Willy Wonka have been embraced by the young and the young at heart, driving a little extra youthful energy into the nation's longest running professional dinner theater.
This season – the Alhambra's 45th! – it is the patrons who will pick the summer show and polls are now open (and it's only a small coincidence that 2012 happens to be an election year).
Now through March 1, the community is invited to visit the website or come to the theater to cast their ballots for one of three delightful summer treats: The Wizard of Oz, Once Upon a Mattress and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The winning show will be announced at the gala grand opening of Hello, Dolly on March 2, and posted on the website (www.alhambrajax.com) and Facebook (Save the Alhambra). So as to encourage voting, there will be no exit polls and leading vote getters will not be disclosed until the polls close. The Summer Show -- for now called Summer Surprise -- is schedule to run June 6 through July 22.
Said Managing Partner Craig Smith, "There are so many great titles to choose from that we couldn't make up our minds. So we narrowed it down to three shows that haven't been at the Alhambra in a while, and are letting our patrons decide what they want to see this summer."
