Gulfport Little Theatre is proud to present its spring musical production, Gypsy, by Arthur Laurents, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Gypsy is directed by Bryan VonderBruegge with musical direction by Alan Cahela, choreography by Twyla Boudreaux Moore, and costumes by Kelli Overmyer. The Assistant Director is Mary LaCour and the producer is Miyoshi McGravey. The show runs April 4-13, with curtain at 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and matinee performances on Sunday with curtain at 3pm.

Gypsy is the ultimate story about an aggressive stage mother. It follows Rose, June and Louise in their trip across the United States during the 1920's, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. Jule Styne's music and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics include Let Me Entertain You, Some People, You'll Never Get Away from Me, If Momma Was Married, All I Need Is the Girl, Everything's Coming Up Roses, You Gotta Get A Gimmick and Together Wherever We Go. Fueled by passion, drive, love, and rejection Gypsy is a gripping story of one of the most frightening aspects of show business.

Considered by many to be the greatest American musical, Gypsy was originally premiered at GLT in 1969, and was performed at the Biloxi Saenger in 1990 starring Barbara Salloum and Chester Delacruz. The current director, Bryan Vonder Bruegge, had the privilege of sharing the stage with Ms. Salloum in the role of Yonkers in the 1990 production. His son, Jeb Vonder Bruegge, is playing the role of Yonkers in the current production. Gypsy stars Carolyn Martin as Mama Rose, Mollye Ladner as Louise, and Jim Rux as Herbie.

Originally written for and performed by the legendary Ethel Merman the role of Mama Rose is heralded as the "King Lear" of the musical theatre canon. The 1959 production of Gypsy was nominated for eight Tony Awards. The musical was revived on Broadway in 1974 with Angela Landsbury, 1989 with Tyne Daly, 2003 with Bernadette Peters, and 2008 with Patti Lupone. Landsbury, Daly and Lupone all won Tony awards for their performances of Rose in the revivals.

Tickets are $15.00, military/seniors $12, students/children $10. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 228-864-7983 or online at www.gulfportlittletheatre.org. Gulfport Little Theatre is located at 2600 13th Avenue in Gulfport behind Chris's Beauty College.
