First performed in 1850 at the Teatro Nuovo of Naples, Don Checco was so successful that it became the most staged opera together with La Traviata by Verdi. In the classic style of the comedy of errors, the story presents hilarious situations marked by a vivid and lively humour, typical of the comic opera. The music writing is fluent and pleasant, putting together the stories of the leading players with lightness. The score of the operetta is preserved in the Biblioteca of San Pietro a Majella.
