Easter is one of the most unusual, least known and performed works of August Strindberg. The only one which ends with a sign of hope.Written in the twentieth century, it tells a story of a family that lived in a specific time: the three days that precede Easter, Holy Thursday, Friday and Saturday. An act for each day, the time of Passion, of a family isolated from the world and closed in itself because of shame and fear.
Stigmatised by the marks of social infamy, prison, madness and misery, the Heysts hide from the terrible Lindkvist, the creditor of the father, who is in jail because of debt. In their imagination, Lindkvist is transformed into a horrible ogre, whose mere footsteps make them feel like children lost in the woods, overwhelmed by fear.
However, the ending is surprisingly and ironically happy. The brilliant and neurotic master seems to tell himself and others: a black eye only adds to negativity. Simply change the eye, see from a brighter point of view, and peace will return and, with it, redemption.
