A detective fringe musical from the Jerusalem based Incubator Theatre
The musical was written and composed by the three members of The Victor Jackson Show, who are also in the cast
The City: A rap opera written entirely in rhyme, performed as one continuous song.
The City is a fringe musical which won many rave reviews and praises. In 2014 the show won the Golden Porcupine Award in four categories (Playwright of the year, Director of the year, Best music and Best group work) and on that same year participated in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The plot focuses on the character of Joe, a cynical and bitter detective working in a corrupt, decaying city, who one stormy night is captivated by a young woman named Sarah Bennett who comes to his office and tells him about the mysterious disappearance of her sister. Joe decides to take the case, a decision that could cost him his life.
Inspired by black music, film noir and detective films, the musical combines rap, hip hop and spoken word with theatrical and poetic texts. The arrangements remain faithful to street language and use unusual, minimalistic instruments (beatbox, a garbage can and chopsticks used as percussion instruments, goblet drum (darbuka), classical guitar and keyboard).
