The Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre Present COUNTLESS MARITZA

This upcoming June, the Israeli Opera will host the Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre. This time, the operetta experts from Budapest- soloists, dancers, singers and musicians- with a rich production of "Countess Maritza"- one of the most beloved operettas in the repertoire by the known Hungarian composer Emmerich Kalman.

"Countess Maritza" will begin performances at the Shlomo Lahat (Chich) Opera House in Tel Aviv from June 15 until June 24, 2017.
Sung in Hungarian, with English and Hebrew surtitles.

Based on a libretto by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grunwald, the operetta was first premiered in Vienna back in 1924. It is very special by its story that takes place not only in royal courtyards, but among the citizens in Transylvania. It leans on the Transylvanian folklore and in it are intertwined Hungarian and Roman dances such as Csárdás and the Viennese Waltz. This creation by Emmerich Kalman is interwoven with the hists that are well know by every fan of the genre: "Gypsy Passion", "Childhood Memories", "Play Gypsy", "Waltz Our Worries Away".

The Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre is regarded as Europe's leading creating home for productions of the Operetta genre. The theatre was founded in 1923 as with its opening began the golden age of the genre in the Hungarian capital. From the 60's, the theatre's activity was widen and it began to specialize in musical theatre as well, where many major musicals were produced in it ever since.

The operetta is directed by the well known Kerényi Miklós Gábor (also known as KERO®). He is the director and artistic director of the Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre. He teaches at the Academy of Theatre and Film in Budapest. His operetta productions include Gräfin Mariza, Die Csárdásfürstin (Kálmán) in Budapest, Salzburg and Prague and Die Fledermaus (J. Strauss) in London, Baden-Baden, Munich, Amsterdam and Catanzaro. He directed Don Carlo, Macbeth (Verdi), Madama Butterfly (Puccini) and musicals such as Miss Saigon, Elisabeth, Romeo & Juliette, Mozart and Rudolf. In 2008, he was awarded the highly prestigious Kossuth Prize.
On the visit in Israel, Kerényi said: "We performed already in Tel-Aviv and the Israeli audience is a very warm audience, a good audience. We want to excite them all over again".
