The Secrets, a new Israeli play written by Hadar Galron, inspired by the script from Hadar Galron & Avi Nesher, will be presented by Beit Lessin Theatre.
The year is 1996. Naomi, daughter of an orthodox judge, rabbi Hess, succeeds in convincing her father to postpone her wedding and allow her to study in the midrasha (institute of Jewish studies for women) in Safed. She shares her subversive dream of becoming the first orthodox female rabbi with female rabbi Dvori, the principal of the midrasha.
Dvori, who promised the judge to prepare Naomi to the marriage life, discovers that Naomi is a prodigy and breaks her promise. She also chooses Naomi to be the havruta (study partner) of Michelle, a rebellious student who was sent to the midrasha as a punishment of a dark and secret sin. Naomi might be determined to be a female rabbi but the connection between her and Michelle sweeps both of them away to unexpected districts and threatens to destroy all her dreams. A story of maturing in a world where dreaming outside the laws is forbidden.
Hadar Galron, who wrote "Mikveh" (2005 Israeli Theatre Award), is a former orthodox playwright who in her creations and performances gives a fascinating and daring voice to religious women in the contemporary Israeli society.
