HAIRSPRAY will open tonight at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv! It will close on October 8, and is scheduled to continue its tour around the country. HAIRSPRAY premiered on Broadway in 2002 and ran until 2009. The show received twelve Tony Award nominations, and won eight, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score.
With music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman, and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, HAIRSPRAY features memorable songs like "Good Morning Baltimore," "Mama I'm A Big Girl Now," and "You Can't Stop The Beat."
The year is 1962 in Baltimore, and plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only One Dream, to dance on "The Corny Collins Show." When her dream finally comes true, Tracy is turned from social outcast to television star. She meets an array of characters along the way, and with her new found fame Tracy Campaigns for the racial integration on the show. HAIRSPRAY uses the real life events of history as a basis to create a real, hope-filled view of the world.
The cast stars Ronny Merhavi, Itzik Cohen, Edan Alterman, Meshi Kleinstein, Matan Onyahem, Ahtaliyah Pierce, Rudi Bainesay, Yiftach Mizrahi, Ido Rosenberg, and Talli Oren.
The creative team includes director Shuki Wagner and Duki Atzmon, musical production by Amir Lakner, choreography by Omer Zimri, set design by Bambi Freidman, costume design by Maya Mider Moran, lighting design by Keren Grenak.
