How do you take a book of short stories and make it a theatre show? "Suddenly, a Knock on the Door" at Cameri Theatre is that kind of situation. When I see a minimalistic scenery I directly hesitating. On the wall, there is a big screen that his role is not known and then it starts, 8 characters enter the theatre. Everybody is wearing all black as the room around and some of them are laying on the floor.
It all starts with a storytelling, and it continues with storytelling, nothing more. The stories by Etgar Keret are amazing, but who knew that bringing them to stage can make them better? The stories are been told by the actors while some of them are moving poppets around. The small objects that were randomly on the floor all around the stage are now the scenery for the puppets. You see everything that happens on the screen above.
Cameras are broadcasting live to the screen. The use of the camera is not shallow at all, they play with the focus, lights, proportions, everything is so sharp. The music and sounds are simply perfect. The only thing that bothered me is that at the beginning the narrator tells the characters description which does not much the actors on stage, but once you realize everything is a storytelling you put that aside.
This is not just a theatre show, this is a pure art, in the same way, that could be in a museum and not just next to one. Except for messing up words, everything was perfect: timing, emotions, moves. It is been made so realistic that you forget it's a theatre show and deeply connect to everything you see. It is funny, sad, uncomfortable, strong, thoughtful, scary and enjoyable that it doesn't fill like one hour just passed. If you want to see something different and unique this is something you cannot skip!
