With their Bella Union released Gracious Tide picking up rave reviews and topping End of Year critic’s polls, we’re delighted to welcome Lanterns on the Lake to Out to Lunch.
Lanterns on the Lake fuse folk melodics with the lightest touches of electronica as a way of giving their soothing, sorrowful plaints a subtle twist.
Basically, if you liked Cowboy Junkies and Mazzy Star's narcotic acoustica, you'll like what this Newcastle sextet do: they are steeped in Americana.
Meanwhile, the band themselves have acknowledged the influence of slowcoustic pioneers Low and the orchestral sweep of Sigur Rós, while others have compared them to 80s mainstays of the 4AD label, This Mortal Coil, and there is indeed some of this quasi-chamber-pop ambience in what they do.
‘The band's aural landscapes are dominated by the sigh-inducing vocals of Hazel Wilde and decorated with swelling and commanding strings, including cellos, violins, and mandolins" – kexp.org
“... some of the loveliest, swooping celestial lushness we've heard in quite some time” (Drowned In Sound)
