Long standing, Nashville-based music pioneers Lambchop are announcing a new record and a really long tour for early 2012. The new album will be the first new material since 2008's OH (OHIO) and from what can be gathered will turn out to be one of Lambchop's best, ever.
The group's mastermind Kurt Wagner had taken a complete break from making music after the death of a close friend and musical collaborator. As Wagner puts it: "At that time his loss came just as sudden and as swift to very core of my relationship with music. The idea of music as a communication with my friend(s) was called into question." And adds, "I was at a point in my creative life where I was ready to come back around to the idea of painting again, and by this sick coincidence painting turned out to be the only thing I could do. A simple solitary act of painting; as if I could pry life itself out of the action."
Wagner focused on his original talents as a painter for the years to come and created a large series of small portraits of Southern debutantes called "Beautillion Millitaire 2000" instead. It was while painting these, as Wagner points out that "suddenly the connection was being made to music and the pictures I was making began to have a relationship to the music that I slowly began to write in conjunction. As I worked I was approached by Mark Nevers with the idea to make another Lambchop record. He had a concept of a sound and method that worked with the tone of the writing. His idea was a kind of psycho-Sinatra like sound and one that involved the arranging of strings and other sounds in a more open yet complex way. In the end we moved ahead as I felt LAMBCHOP had at least one more good record in us."
This record will be released via City Slang early in 2012. It will be the band's 10th regular studio album, adding to a career that spans over 18 years and has seen them go on to sell more than a million records. Further information about the new album, which could have been called "Lambchop Is A Painter", but isn't, will be available from Lambchop.net, City Slang and Konzertagentur Berthold Seliger in the coming weeks.
