Written by the Oscar nominated Martin McDonagh, The Lonesome West will be the third in-house production from The Everyman this year following on from the success of Kevin Barry's Autumn Royal and the adaptation of Louise O'Neill's Asking For It. Directed by Julie Kelleher, who is also the Artistic Director of The Everyman, The Lonesome West opens on Tuesday, 31st July and continues until Saturday, 25th August.
The show follows in the footsteps of successful productions over the past few summers as a staging of an modern Irish classic. With a familiar creative team and a mixture of both new and experienced Irish actors, The Everyman produced Dancing At Lughnasa by Brian Friel last year as well as Frank McGuinness' The Factory Girls (2016), Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock (2016), and Brian Friel's Lovers (2015). As a producing house, The Everyman is central to Cork's vibrant cultural ecology and is hugely committed to supporting and showcasing the work of established and emerging theatre artists. This has included the Irish premiere of Lynda Radley's Futureproof, David Greig's The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart (2015) and Gounod's opera, Faust (2015).
The Lonesome West is a comic masterpiece in the darkest sense and this staging brings together an exciting creative team, Deirdre Dwyer (Set and Costume Design) Brian Mitchell (Lighting Design) and Chris Schmidt-Martin (Sound Design) and the acting talents of Gus McDonagh, John McCarthy, Andrew Holden and Amy McElhatton, fresh from her appearance in The Everyman's recent production, Asking For It.
