'I am a GAA man. As team players, our individuality is silent. We conform to the ideas, beliefs and motivations of the team. We suppress our emotions to strengthen our exterior. We must challenge the idea of ourselves. Who am I? What is important to me? What is within me?'
Dublin Fringe 2017 premieres a site-specific performance in a handball alley in Dublin's City Centre, this September 20th to 24th. 'Spliced' is an autobiographical multi-disciplinary piece from one of the countries most exciting upcoming writers and performers, Timmy Creed.
Hard-hitting, honest and brave; this new collaboration by Creed, along with David Mathúna (visual artist), Chris Somers (composer), produced by Natasha Duffy, and directed by Gina Moxley, shines a light on the fragility of the sportsman behind the mask, and begins a conversation about identity and mental health in the GAA.
Timmy commented: ''I wanted to make a show that celebrates and questions the GAA. To bring sports fans to the theatre and offer them a chance to engage with live art. Inter-changing the theatre arena with the sports arena.''
In a handball alley between three concrete walls, a conversation is taking place between a hurler, an artist and a musician. Timmy is contemplating life outside the institution that raised him: the GAA. Must he go back to fully understand? Why are emotions suppressed for a stronger exterior? Can we talk about this?
?'Spliced', presented by Chalk It Down Productions, premieres outdoors at St. Michan's Park Handball Alley, Green Street, as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival 2017. It is the first time that this unique outdoor space will be used for a theatrical event. The show previews on Wednesday 20th September at 8.30pm, and runs from Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th September, 8.30pm. Tickets €15/€13 concession are available from fringefest.com.
