'Punt' is a story of gambling culture in Ireland, following one man on the slippery slope to rock bottom after a lifetime of small bets, race meetings, online gauntlets, high stakes card games and the unspoken challenges that go with a life of 'investing' in chance.
This one-man theatre show explores the shadowy sub culture of gambling in Ireland. While examining its causes & effects, the play asks how gambling has insidiously infiltrated a generational cross section of communities in Ireland, whilst slowly rupturing the very fabric of family, community, and place.
Motivated by the increasing accessibility to gambling via technology, for 'Punt', Honest Arts create a world where words are no longer the sole story teller. By utilising the latest mechanisms in visual design technology, they suggest the firing synapses of the human brain; giving the audience an insight into both and ultimately supporting Pius McGrath's physical performance. The show investigates the constant stream of alerts, adverts and notifications that interrupt our daily lives and how they contribute to incubating an addiction such as gambling.
'Punt' takes place in another world, either it is the ephemeral confines of Jack's sub-conscious mind, or it is a limitless purgatory where he encounters the memorable past experiences of his life. The audience experiences what Jack unwillingly explores as his sub-conscious unpacks his short life. The play explores the emotional trauma as a result of his actions in a barrage of visual and sonic stimuli that thrust the audience and performer alike on a roller coaster of warped vignettes and flashbacks as they conduct an incisive dissection of this cerebral mania.
