Cork Pops Orchestra to Present A YOUNG PERSON'S GUIDE With Special Guest Rapper GMC, March 5

CIT, in association with RTE lyric fm, Cork Independent and Cork City Council presents A Young Person's Guide, a multi-media musical experience with Evelyn Grant and the Cork Pops Orchestra and special guest rapper GMC. Primary school shows will take place at City Hall in Cork Wednesday 5th March at 10:00am and 12:00 noon.

The Cork Pops Orchestra has launched its new website www.corkpops.ie to engage with students and teachers and to enhance the experience of attending concerts. There are youtube links to the programme and teachers introductory notes with links to interesting musical websites. The teachers, pupils and their parents can engage with this material to encourage a love of all kinds of music. The website encourages them to explore the world of music,

The Cork Pops Orchestra, conducted by Evelyn Grant, has been performing concerts for schools for over twenty five years. Generations of young people from the Munster region have been introduced to the joy of classical music through this entertaining, inspiring, and educational experience.

Making connections between music of the past and present has been central to the programmes presented - with the latest music technology and popular hits demonstrated and explored.

Rapper GMC (aka Garry McCarthy) is a highly-regarded music producer/rapper/youth workshop facilitator from Co. Cork. His group from Farranree Boys' National School were stars on the Late Late Toy Show last December. He has already released 3 albums, and penned a top 20 hit with "Not Tonight - The Bouncer Song". His performances include the Electric Picnic and The Marquee in Cork. Garry has a unique style which brings witty, edgy and local lyrics over some of the catchiest beats out there. Never trying to Americanise his music, Garry remains true to himself and urges young people to try do the same when expressing themselves lyrically and musically.

Evelyn Grant has a busy career as a performer, broadcaster, examiner and adjudicator. A regular voice of RTE Lyric fm, she has made several radio documentaries, including 'Love Notes' for the Doc on One (RTE Radio 1), celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the National Youth Orchestra. She was awarded a PhD for her research on Social Inclusion in Music Education in Ireland.

The Cork Pops Orchestra, conducted by Evelyn Grant, played its inaugural concert to 50,000 people in an open air 'Proms' on the final night of the Tall Ships visit to Cork in July 1991, and has been part of many important civic celebrations since that year.

Highlights of the orchestra's career include the Lord Mayor's Concerts; Cork 2005 European Cultural Capital performances with Sir James Galway and many more. The Tea-Dances for the Young at Heart are a much-loved part of their activity; alongside regular performances at Strauss Balls for various fund-raising events.The orchestra was seen by 62 million viewers in the US in a PBS special featuring Tommy Fleming, recorded in Knock Basilica.
