"On some days I feel this island as a perfect home and resting place; on other days I feel that I am a waif among the people. I can feel more with them than they can feel with me, and while I wander among them, they like me sometimes, and laugh at me sometimes, yet never know what I am doing."
Opens Wednesday 6th January, 2016, at the Viking Theatre, Clontarf, and touring as below.
Synge wrote four books about his trips to the Aran islands, and in his time there he gathered much of the material and stories that he would mine for the great plays he is most famous for. The text of "The Aran Islands" has been very much forgotten, but it is the most precise and sympathetic description of life on the Aran islands at the beginning of the 20th century. What Synge describes, with its stories, its funerals, its evictions, its exposure to the elements, is an essential part of what makes up Irish culture.
