Dramatists Play Service has revealed additions to its catalog, headlined by The Apiary, the highly anticipated new play by celebrated playwright Kate Douglas.

The Apiary is an audacious and sharp-witted cautionary tale. Twenty-two years into the future, two lab researchers hatch a plan which could change the world, and bring back the endangered honey bee population. If only they can find the volunteers. Douglas, known for her innovative storytelling has crafted a work which was hailed by The New York Times as “a bright strange and mesmerizing marvel,” and was assigned a Critic's Pick.

“We are thrilled to welcome The Apiary into the DPS catalog,” says Ted Chapin, Chief Executive Officer of BLG. “Kate Douglas has an extraordinary voice, and this play, in particular, speaks to universal themes with remarkable beauty and humor. It's an honor to bring this work to theatres of all sizes.”

Supporting this exciting acquisition are two new titles by one of the most prolific and beloved playwrights of our time, Lauren Gunderson: anthropology and Artemisia.

In anthropology, Gunderson delves into the complexities of technology, memory, and the human heart, weaving a thrilling narrative about a woman who uses artificial intelligence to reconnect with her missing sister. This riveting play showcases Gunderson's signature ability to blend sharp wit, scientific curiosity, and profound emotional depth.

Artemisia, another standout addition, offers a powerful and inspiring portrayal of the groundbreaking Renaissance painter, Artemisia Gentileschi. This biographical drama captures the triumphs and struggles of one of history's most resilient female artists with humor and warmth, in a play that is as passionate as it is relevant for today's audiences.

“These new works from Lauren Gunderson embody the kind of dynamic, thought-provoking theatre that DPS is proud to represent,” continues Chapin. “With anthropology and Artemisia, Gunderson continues to push the boundaries of contemporary theatre while remaining deeply accessible and moving.”

DPS, founded in 1936, has long been a pillar of the theatrical licensing industry, representing the works of some of the world's most celebrated playwrights, including Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Lynn Nottage, Paula Vogel, and Nilo Cruz. With a legacy rooted in fostering the creation and distribution of groundbreaking theatrical works, DPS continues to champion both emerging and established voices, ensuring that their stories are shared with audiences worldwide.
