Caring for the Dead, a provocative new play by Kati Schwartz (Bad People on Audible), will have a private industry reading at Open Jar Studios on Tuesday, December 10th. The reading will be directed by Ashley Kelly Tata (Ipsa Dixit) and features original music by Cathryn Wake (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) and Neil Reynolds.
The play follows Georgie, a sarcastic and rebellious young woman who, in the wake of her father's attempted suicide, forms an unexpected bond with a self-proclaimed rockstar. As tensions rise, the production transforms into a high-energy rock concert experience, blending raw emotion with live music to explore the complexities of family, identity, and sacrifice.
The cast of Caring for the Dead includes Zo Tipp (American Horror Story), Michael Luwoye (Hamilton), Merissa Czyz (City on a Hill), Michael Frederic (Law & Order: Organized Crime), and Alex Lanning, with Grey Schwartz stage managing and Greg Kamp general managing.
Caring for the Dead was first staged as a reading at Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2021, was a finalist for the Eugene O'Neill National Music Theatre Conference in 2022, and is being developed, in part, through the Spark Grant Program from The Jeffrey L. Nissen Arts Education and Development Fund in partnership with Open Jar Studios.
