The musical will be directed by Joel Kirk with music and lyrics by Alex Petti and book and lyrics by Annie Pulsipher. This musical marks the sixth show to be incubated at the Indiana nonprofit. Past shows include The Devil Wears Prada, Ever After, Hamlet, The Turning, and Five Points.

A writer's retreat will take place between November 1st and November 5th, 2023 with the director, authors, and actors Eric Wiegand (Broadway's Plaza Suite) and Emilia Suárez (Hulu's Up Here). The retreat will be followed by concerts of the new musical that will take place at The Toby in Indianapolis during Prom month on April 20th, 2024 at 5:00PM and 8:00PM. Tickets will go on sale for the concert later this month.

The musical was originally developed at Carnegie Mellon's Playground Festival. It won the Premiere Premieres! Festival in Chicago in 2017 and SheNYC Festival in New York in 2018 (Best Score Winner). In 2019, it was workshopped at Berklee College of Music. Most recently, the musical ran Off-Broadway at The Players Theatre for a limited run this summer, The Trouble With Dead Boyfriends will be the sixth musical incubated at Discovering Broadway Inc.

The Trouble With Dead Boyfriends is a gory feminist musical comedy aimed at the sexy, monster-loving teen we all keep buried in our hearts and middle school journals. Stella, Grace, and Madison are three BFFs who've been planning their perfect Senior Prom since Kindergarten. The most essential element of a perfect Prom? A perfect date, of course. Luckily the girls have summoned their dream dates even if they are a bit, well ... dead. But when Prom takes a turn for the worse, and their perfect dates reveal themselves to be perfectly monstrous, will the girls-and more importantly THEIR FRIENDSHIP-survive!?

Director Joel Kirk, said, "We are thrilled to host this hysterical feminist original musical in Indiana. In November, our writer's retreat will focus on preparing the musical for a commercial audience. In April, experience the pop rock score in all its gory! So buy a ticket, dress up in your Prom finery, grab a Jell-o shot, and I'll see you on the dance floor!"

Composer and Co-Lyricist Alex Petti said, "Every time we think this show has taken its last step, it rises from the dead and claims more victims. Indiana's next."

Bookwriter and Co-Lyricist Annie Pulsipher, "This show is near and dear to my high school self's heart, and I cannot wait for it to capture a larger audience in its hilarious thrall."

In addition to incubating Broadway-bound musicals, the nonprofit hosts master classes for aspiring and at-risk youth. Hamilton's Phillipa Soo taught a master class in September of this year at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. To learn more about Discovering Broadway, visit discoveringbroadway.org.
