"I'm thrilled to be teaming up with Concord Theatricals again on my second Ibsen adaptation, An Enemy of the People,” said Herzog. “Working on Ibsen's classic play, I was gobsmacked by its relevance to our contemporary politics. I'd love to see this great old play embraced by the next generation of theatre makers here in the U.S. and internationally, and I'm grateful that Concord will bring the play to new audiences."
“Amy is the rare dramatist who can spar with the classics and make the result feel like a work that's truly her own. This adaptation offers an electrifying take on this well-known play that will move contemporary audiences,” said Amy Rose Marsh, Vice President of Acquisitions and Artistic Development at Concord Theatricals. “For theatres, this is a timely choice of material, as we, as a society, wrangle with the challenge of misinformation.”
At the center of An Enemy of The People is the honorable and well-regarded Doctor Thomas Stockmann, who discovers a catastrophe that risks the lives of everyone in his 19th Century Norwegian town. After warning his community, he is shocked by the town leaders' attempts to silence and discredit him.
An Enemy of the People opened at Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre on May 8 for a strictly limited 16-week engagement through June 23. Directed by Sam Gold, and starring Tony Award winner Jeremy Strong as Doctor Thomas Stockmann,
An Enemy of the People received four 2024 Tony Award nominations, including for Best Revival of a Play, with Herzog winning a 2024 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Adaptation.
An Enemy of the People wasn't Herzog's only Broadway production in the 2024 season – the playwright also penned the Tony Award-nominated Broadway production of Mary Jane, which opened on April 23, starring Rachel McAdams. In the 2023 Broadway season, Herzog adapted Ibsen's A Doll's House, starring Jessica Chastain to great acclaim. Mary Jane, A Doll's House, and Herzog's earlier works, Belleville and 4000 Miles are all available for licensing from Concord Theatricals.
