An invitation-only reading of the new musical HEARTBEATS will be presented on May 13th in Manhattan.
Directed by Lauren Zeftel (AMBITION: the Female American Serial Killer Musical, Small Mouth Sounds), the reading will feature Alli Mauzey (Kimberly Akimbo), Ryan McCartan (Frozen, Heathers), Morgan Siobhan Green (Hadestown), Wade McCollum (Water For Elephants), Wren Rivera (Jagged Little Pill, TEETH), Miguel Gil (Kimberly Akimbo), Ashlyn Maddox (Parade), Anna Zavelson (The Light In The Piazza), Maggie Kuntz (The Outsiders), Christina Saffran (A Chorus Line), Emma Tattenbaum-Fine (Comedy Central “Comic to Watch”), and Joey Nordeman.
A 2024 O'Neill NMTC Semi-Finalist, HEARTBEATS tells the story of Eve- a driven, idealistic, and accidentally pregnant Indiana 17-year-old, just as she's about to follow her dreams at college. After a thwarted illegal abortion attempt, Eve ends up in the New Life Unit: a pilot prison program created by the federal government since the passage of the Unborn Protection Act, which codified abortion as murder.
Over the next 9 months, Eve and her fellow inmates must reckon with parenthood, purpose, and mortality. With (dark) comedy and heart, HEARTBEATS explores how America's harsh dictums on sex and gender affect all of us. The creative team includes Music Director and Orchestrator Cole P. Abod and Stage Manager Pedro Hernandez. The band features Emma Ford, Rachel Gawell Burns, Lexi Bodick, Nick Potocki, and Cole P. Abod.
HEARTBEATS has received developmental support from Blank Space Workshop and The Songbyrd Organization. This reading will be produced by Lily Rosen.
