SPOTLIGHT THEATRE will bring an original Indonesian musical this August. Titled KIRANA: JADILAH IMPIAN SEJATIMU ('KIRANA: Be Your True Dream'), the production will run for three showtimes through August 23rd-25th at GEDUNG KESENIAN JAKARTA.
Kirana Lestari, a girl from the village of Tembi, Bantul, Yogyakarta, longs to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer, following the steps of her penyinden (a traditional Javanese style of singing) mother. But her hopes are dashed when she arrived at the big city. Her family is faced by a multitude of troubles as she herself becomes a victim of rampant bullying.
The production is promoted as deeply steeped in a rich Javanese style, including a 16-piece soundtrack in a variety of musical genres as well as an examination of current social issues. The script is written by Hadyus Santoso while Ibas Aragi assumes the role of director.
At the press conference held on July 7th, Santoso said that the script is based on his observation of the pervasive individualist attitude found among people today. KIRANA will present the narrative through a lens of traditional Yogyakarta culture and values.
Martini Murti, the production consultant for Javanese culture and choreography, added that the actors had to spend three months to learn Javanese culture in order to understand their character. The actors, all hailing from the capital city of Jakarta, were mostly familiar with Indonesian and English instead of the setting's Javanese language.
Show times are as follow:
Friday, August 23rd - 19.00 (sold out)
Saturday, August 24th - 17.00
Sunday, August 25th - 15.00
