BWW Previews: MENARA INGATAN by Teater Garasi in Teater Kecil, Jakarta

Teater Garasi / Garasi Performance Institute and Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation, in collaboration with Jakarta Arts Council, present a musical theatre performance (muziktheatre) MENARA INGATAN, based on the composition by Yennu Ariendra (Teater Garasi's artist and Melancholic Bitch music group) in Teater Kecil, Taman Ismail Marzuki Jakarta, May 24-25.

The process of creating the musical composition for MENARA INGATAN as well as the staging and visualization process, all based on the logic, theatre approach and theatre functions. This work is relying on readings and reflections from a particular issue or theme, which is then translated into musical compositions that weigh the theme's narrative representation and the dramatic effect it wants to create.

MENARA INGATAN is not the ordinary musical theatre, taking place outside any current musical theatre corridor. Whether it is opera, operette, musical, singspiels, or drama per musica, MENARA INGATAN tends to take advantage on space that is often called music-theatre (from German: muziktheater). This space classifies in more openly musical theatre work, such as Merredith Monk, Heinner Goebbels, Laurie Anderson, Matmos, and so on. These names are known for their work in music-based theatre.

The project involves various interdisciplinary artists from traditional music repertoire, digital music, theatre, to contemporary art.

Musical composition and staging of MENARA INGATAN borrows the performance structure of Gandrung Banyuwangi, which is divided into three act: Jejer, Paju and Seblang Subuh. For composition and musical appearance, Yennu Ariendra collaborated with Andi Meinl, Asa Rahmana, Nadya Hatta and Silir Pujiwati. Stage Crew include Ugoran Prasad (dramaturg), Yossy Herman Susilo (sound designer), Ignatius Sugiarto (lighting designer), Timoteus Anggawan Kusno (artist), Gunawan Maryanto (performer and co-director), Dendi Madiya (performer and co-director), Fidelis Krus, Muchammad Syachbudin, Ricky Unik and Sri Qadariatin (performer)

MENARA INGATAN is the latest production of Teater Garasi / Garasi Performance Institute. This work tells a story from a history and memory of Indonesia, which is seen from the historial perspective of Gandrung Banyuwangi, a form of traditional performances in East Java. The composer's and collaborator's personal reflections then sees that Gandrung and their foreign supporters are (also) a stubborn resistance in the face of the powers that want to overthrow his success.
