Amber Gray recently starred as the scene-stealing Persephone in the Tony Award-winning Best Musical Hadestown, for which she received a Tony nomination for “Best Featured Actress in a Musical” as well as a Grammy Award for “Best Musical Theatre Album.” She is also known for her work in the Tony-nominated Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet Of 1812 opposite Josh Groban, for which she won the Theatre World Award, and for Sam Gold’s Macbeth. Amber got her start singing in the come-all choirs of school and church. These communities instilled in her a love for making sound and taught her that singing is a human right and deeply therapeutic art – but the goal was always to blend. It wasn’t until adulthood that she was encouraged – perhaps, forced – to sing solo. This evening will journey through songs that gave Gray a voice, songwriters who enabled Gray’s musical theatre career, and samplings of upcoming work – including Gray’s Eartha Kitt project and her post-retirement seedy lounge singer fantasy.
On television, she can be seen recurring as Gloria Valentine in Barry Jenkin’s Golden Globe Award Winning The Underground Railroad for Amazon and in Showtime’s Emmy-nominated limited series Escape At Dannemora, directed by Ben Stiller and starring Patricia Arquette, Benicio Del Toro, and Paul Dano.
