On the heels of a welcoming reception held for the Madame Walker Theatre Center's new President, Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey, hosted by IDI's President Tamara Zahn, the Walker has now been named Indy's Best Theatre. WRTV and the IndyChannel.com has an annual voting process for the public to decide who the best local businesses are out of more than 2,800 Indianapolis area businesses. Eligible businesses are nominated by online readers and winners are determined by popular vote.

The Madame Walker Theatre Center, housed in the historic Madame C.J. Walker Building, has long symbolized the spirit of creativity and community pride in the city of Indianapolis. Named after America's first "self-made" female millionaire-Madam C.J. Walker-the site represents the achievements, art forms, culture and history of African-American people. "It is my sincere prayer that on the 100th anniversary of Madam C.J. Walker's arrival in Indianapolis, we can accomplish a portion of what she was able to do by continuing her legacy and to celebrating the arts in a meaningful way. Our progress is onward & upward," explains Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey, CEO.

Long overdue for good news, the Walker is thrilled to be named the best theatre in Indianapolis and hopes this will result in more productions, future rentals and greater recognition on the national platform.

The Madame Walker Theatre Center, an internationally recognized National Historic Landmark, preserves and builds upon the entrepreneurial and philanthropic legacy of its namesake by celebrating the best of African American culture and performance arts, by nurturing youth through arts education and by providing a welcoming venue for arts programming and entrepreneurial activities for all cultures in our community and nation.
