Fort Wayne Civic Theatre announces its 2012-13:
Dreamgirls July 28 – August 12, 2012
Meet “The Dreams”, a trio of young singers breaking into the changing music scene of the 1960’s. The show captures their personal triumphs and failures as they navigate the harsh realities of the business side of the entertainment industry. No less important are the men in their lives that support and sometimes derail them. With a variety of musical styles represented - from Rock & Roll to Motown to Disco - Dreamgirls celebrates the richness of American Music along with classic stories of romance, betrayal and redemption.
A Few Good Men September 8-16, 2012
The dramatic story of two men on trial for the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay sizzles on stage. Their callow young Navy lawyer expects a plea bargain and a cover up. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, he eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, in so doing, puts the Marine code of honor on trial. Writer Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network) later adapted the play for the 1992 hit film.
A Christmas Story November 3-18, 2012
The stage adaptation of Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa himself. All the treasured elements from the motion picture are here, including the family’s temperamental furnace; Scott Farkas - the school bully; the experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin and more!
The Drowsy Chaperone March 2-17, 2013
An agoraphobic musical theater fan plays his favorite cast album and finds that the show literally bursts to life in his living room. Telling the rambunctious tale of a Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, her true love, this musical romp incorporates mistaken identities, dream sequences, an English Butler and of course the “Drowsy” (i.e. tipsy) Chaperone! Honoring the classic musicals of the jazz age, this show speaks to the great unspoken desire in all of our hearts: to be entertained.
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella May 10-19, 2013
Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella enchanted viewers with the timeless magic of the fairy tale paired with classic Broadway-style music and lyrics. Another TV generation would fall in love with Lesley Anne Warren’s 1965 Cinderella, as would those who saw the 1997 version starring Brandy. Adapted for the stage, this show remains true to the beloved movie. Cinderella is the original rags-to-riches story of a girl who finds that dreams really can come true.
Lombard May 31 – June 9, 2013
As Carole Lombard awaits her flight home to L.A. and Clark Gable, she revisits her colorful past. Drawing liberally upon her legendary sailor’s vocabulary, Lombard reminisces on ex-husband William Powell, as well as Russ Colombo, George Raft, Gary Cooper, Joseph P. Kennedy and her attempt to secure the role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind. Despite being set on the eve of her death, Lombard is the warm, funny story of a woman who was a fighter, both in her career and personal life.
